5-letter words starting with GEL are relatively few, which means it can be easy to figure out what’s left. You’re essentially trying to solve a puzzle: fill in the blanks, find letters you already know or think you might have.
For example, if you already know that your guess is “GELID,” then all of the remaining blanks (positions 4–5) are already filled. If you only know that the first three letters are “GEL” and there are two more, but you also know that one of those letters is “I,” then you’re down to just one letter to guess, “D.”
The same is true for other words beginning with GEL. The question becomes: Which ones? Let’s look at some of the possibilities.
Words beginning with GEL
GELDS, GELEE, GELID, GELLY, GELTS
These are the dictionary entries that match the GEL prefix pattern. These words may or may not appear in Wordle, depending on whether the word has been accepted by the game as either an answer or a guess. We’ll get to that shortly.
Here’s how these words differ:
GELDS: third-person singular present of geld; castrate an animal, especially a horse.
GELEE: gelled suspension for culinary purposes.
GELID: very cold, icy or frosty.
GELLY: obsolete jelly; slang for gelignite.
GELTS: plural of gelt; slang for money or profit.
Wordle and Scrabble validity
WordHippo lists these five as possible candidates, but its own dictionary lists several others as well, including Gelao, Gello, and Gelug. But we’ve found BestWordList to be helpful in determining whether or not a given word will be playable within Wordle. In addition to listing Scrabble valid words, it adds regional validity markings so you can see where each word is valid in Scrabble. Those markings only tell you about Scrabble, though. They don’t verify whether Wordle currently accepts a word as a guess or includes it among its possible answers.
Once you narrow down the potential list of words, you need to determine what letters you already have confirmed. That’s the key to solving Wordle — eliminating incorrect possibilities until you’re able to find the correct word.
Confirmed prefix: G in position 1, E in position 2, L in position 3.

Remaining positions: 4–5.
Let’s try filtering this list using hypothetical inputs:
Hypothetical green I in position 4: GELID alone within the shortlist.
Hypothetical required T: GELTS alone within the shortlist.
Hypothetical fully excluded S: remove GELDS and GELTS; retain GELEE, GELID and GELLY.
Finder: Known letters (green), Include letters (yellow), Exclude letters (gray).
In essence, you’ll need to spell out the answer, deducing which word fits the known letters within the shortlist. For example, suppose that you enter “GELID” and it turns out to be right. Then all the remaining letters are already confirmed.
Duplicate letters and gray extras
But suppose you don’t remember exactly what you entered and instead want to rely on feedback from past guesses. Duplicate letters in the dictionary entry indicate which letters have multiple copies available. For instance, “GELEE” includes three Es — in positions 2, 4 and 5. When entering a complete guess, make sure that you set each tile’s color accordingly.
When a solver enters a guess and color pattern, it helps preserve confirmed letters while handling gray extras. It can be helpful to note when you’ve entered extra guessed copies of a letter that aren’t accounted for, but it doesn’t hurt to try.
GELEE: three Es, positions 2, 4 and 5.
GELLY: two Ls, positions 3 and 4.
Each green or yellow tile: one accounted-for copy.
Extra guessed copies: can be gray.
Gray extra E or L: already confirmed copy retained.
