I’ve been working on a list of 5 letter words that start with “P” to help you out with your next Wordle guess. This is by no means an exhaustive list, but it’s a good starting point.

If you’d like, I can also show you how to use this list to help you narrow down the answer based on feedback from your previous guesses. But first, let me show you the list of words I came up with.

5 Letter Words That Start With P

PA: PAINT, PANEL, PAPER

PE: PEACH, PEARL, PENNY

PH: PHASE, PHONE, PHOTO

PI: PIANO, PILOT, PITCH

PL: PLACE, PLANE, PLATE

PO: POINT, POPPY, PORCH

PR: PRICE, PRIDE, PRINT

PU: PULSE, PUPPY, PURSE

Dictionary Words and Wordle Answers

Now, before I go any further, I want to make sure you understand what this shortlist actually establishes. First, all of these words are in the dictionary. Some may be rare, regional, or historical entries, but they’re all valid dictionary words.

However, just because a word is in the dictionary doesn’t mean that it will be accepted as a guess in Wordle. And just because a word is in the dictionary and accepted as a guess doesn’t mean it’ll be in the official Wordle answer list. So please keep in mind that this shortlist is not a definitive list of possible answers, but rather a list of vocabulary options that you could compare with clues you already have.

Narrow Down by the Final Letter

So if you have any other letters that you know are in the answer, you can use that to narrow it down even more. For example, if you know the final letter is E, then you could look at this list and eliminate all of the words that don’t end with E:

PLACE, PLANE, PLATE, PURSE

And if you know the final letter is T, you could eliminate all of the words that don’t end with T:

PAINT, PILOT, POINT, PRINT

Or if you know the final letter is Y, you could eliminate all of the words that don’t end with Y:

PENNY, POPPY, PUPPY

And so on. The possibilities are endless, so it really depends on what letters you already have figured out.

Match Known Letters With Their Positions

But sometimes, you might have some letters that you know are in the answer, but you don’t know where they go. In that case, you might need to do a bit more work to narrow things down.

Let’s say, for example, that you know the answer has the letters P, L, A, and C, but you don’t know which position each letter goes into. You might have something like this:

P _ _ _ _

_ L _ _ _

_ _ A _ _

_ _ _ C _

You would then go through your list of possible answers and try to match up the known letters with their correct positions. A candidate must contain all four of your known letters and match every other confirmed clue to remain a possible answer.

Ruled Out Letters and Duplicate Counts

Of course, there’s always the chance that your initial assumption about one of the letters being present is incorrect. So while you’re going through your list of possible answers, you should also keep track of which letters you’ve ruled out. Those letters won’t appear anywhere else in the answer. But one green or yellow P and one gray P in a two-P guess mean exactly one P, not none. That rules out PAPER’s two Ps and POPPY’s and PUPPY’s three.

For example, if you rule out the letter C, then you can eliminate all of the words that contain C from your list of possible answers. And if you rule out the letter L, then you can eliminate all of the words that contain L. Green P first and E fifth fit PLACE, PLANE and PLATE. Yellow L from fourth belongs elsewhere; second fits all three. If C and T are absent, only PLANE remains of these three.

Double Check Your Guess

As you continue narrowing things down, you’ll eventually get to the point where you’ll only have one possible answer left. At that point, you can either take a shot in the dark and enter your guess, or you can take a moment to double-check your work to make sure that you haven’t missed anything.

In my opinion, it’s always better to be safe than sorry when playing Wordle. After all, the game is designed to test your vocabulary and spelling skills, so you want to give yourself the best chance possible of winning. You can enter known, included and excluded letters in the five-letter finder, checking yellow positions and duplicate counts yourself. Or enter your guesses and set tile colors in the main solver.
