The best way to start is by browsing the list of five-letter words beginning with B. We’ll take this as an editorial starting point, based on Dictionary.com’s listed spellings.
BADGE, BAGEL, BEACH, BEARD, BLEND, BLOOM, BRICK, BRUSH
In many cases, there are multiple options. In others, there may be none, or just one. The repeated letters can sometimes help too, as in the following additional options:
BEECH (two Es)
BLOOM (two Os)
BLURB (two Bs)
Filter words by known positions
If you already know some of the letters that will appear in your next guess, then it’s a good idea to find all five-letter words beginning with B that fit those known positions. If you have established some constraints—like certain letters not being part of your answer—you might also want to consider them when selecting possible options.
A word-finding workflow exists that allows you to search using confirmed positions and established letter constraints. Let’s walk through a hypothetical example:
You’ve determined that your first letter must be a B. Other than that, however, you’re not sure what the rest of the letters will look like.
Next, suppose that you’ve narrowed the field by identifying two other letters: You know that your second letter is an E, and your last letter is an H.
Now, both BEACH and BEECH fit the pattern. Suppose, though, that we later determine that A isn’t in the answer at all. Excluding A would remove BEACH from consideration; BEECH remains.
Carry the shortlist into the solver
You’ll use the same filtering conditions to carry your list into the solver. This is where the real work begins, though, as you begin trying guesses and eliminating incorrect answers.
Open the finder in Wordle
We suggest using the finder’s “Open in Wordle solver” option, but don’t let that stop you from doing the same in another tool or even manually. Either way, you can filter the available words to see what fits.
In our hypothetical scenario above, we’d enter “B” in the first known-letter slot, “E” in the second, and “H” in the fifth. These represent the confirmed positions of these letters within your answer.
Wordle’s yellow tiles show that a letter is in the answer but cannot go in that position, so you should record those restrictions using the finder’s “Add letters not in this spot” option. The documented workflow, though, puts those full yellow-position restrictions in the solver: enter your guesses and match their tile colors. The finder documents known positions, included letters, and excluded letters. Included letters must appear; excluded letters apply the exclusions you’ve established. You can carry those conditions into the solver.

For example, if the letter B is found in the third position, you’d mark it as such in Wordle.
Once you’ve entered your guesses, you tap each tile to match the color they appear as in the game itself.
If you’ve fully recorded the colors of your green tiles, yellow restrictions, and gray-letter constraints, the site’s Wordle Solver will offer up the best next guess. This process works whether you’re playing via the web browser or an app.
Discovering candidates vs. establishing game eligibility
Our lists of potential candidates aren’t meant to tell you which word is currently playable. They simply show you the possibilities.
Dictionary entries can serve as a candidate-discovery aid, especially if you need help finding more five-letter words beginning with B. Many people build their own lists of possible solutions, drawing from open word lists instead of copying them directly from the Wordle website.
Two popular sources for these kinds of lists are ENABLE and SCOWL.
ENABLE is a public-domain word list that was created to replace the earlier Scrabble dictionary. SCOWL stands for Spell Checker Oriented Word Lists, developed by Kevin Atkinson, a computer scientist who previously worked at Microsoft.
These word lists also feature common-word labels that indicate how frequently each word appears in everyday usage. Common words usually occur in the more frequent SCOWL levels, and they tend to exclude simple plurals and past tenses of words. Simple plurals and past tenses of words rarely used as Wordle answers anyway.
Both site lists were built from open word lists, and neither was copied directly from Wordle. Unofficial Wordle lists aren’t guaranteed to reflect current Wordle acceptance or the answer eligibility.
There’s always room to add more to these lists, especially since they weren’t built from the Wordle database itself. If you have any new ideas, feel free to share them with us!
