Where the Words Come From
The lists combine ENABLE, a public-domain word list used by many word games, with SCOWL (Spell Checker Oriented Word Lists) by Kevin Atkinson. Common words are those in SCOWL's more frequent levels, minus simple plurals and past tenses, which Wordle rarely uses as answers.

How many 5 letter words are there?
Our list has 8,802 five-letter words from the ENABLE and SCOWL word lists. About 2,765 of them are everyday words that are likely Wordle answers; the rest are valid but rare.
Which letter do most 5 letter words start with?
S, by a wide margin: more than one in ten five-letter words starts with S, partly because of plurals and words like STAIR, SLATE and SHORE. C, B, P and T follow.
What does “common word” mean in these lists?
Common words come from the more frequent levels of the SCOWL word list, without simple plurals and past tenses. Wordle answers are everyday words, so these are listed first and highlighted.
Are these the official Wordle answers?
No. These lists are built from open word lists, not copied from the game. They include every likely answer and many more valid words.
