Wordle puzzles have made words a common experience in many homes. One way to find solutions is by knowing what letters are in a word, and where they might be.

The following list of five-letter words with an “E” as the second letter provides you with some ideas for solving any particular Wordle puzzle that may come your way. Some are repeated words (e.g., GEESE) while others are new.

You can use this information to either build a guess or narrow down the number of possibilities. While there are more than 200 five-letter words with an “E” in the second position, we’ve included the most relevant ones.

Wordle’s Feedback System

If you’re not familiar with Wordle’s feedback system, it can help to know what each tile represents:

  • Green means the letter is correct and in the right place

  • Yellow means the letter is correct but misplaced

  • Gray means the letter isn’t in the word, or you’ve guessed more copies of it than the answer contains

A Manual Approach

Let’s look at an example. If you were told that the letter “E” was in the second spot, and that the letter “C” was in the fourth position, how would you identify which words were valid options? You could try filtering out words that don’t meet those two conditions.

In this case, BEACH, BENCH, BEECH, and PERCH would all be acceptable. But suppose that the game’s feedback said that the letter “B” wasn’t in the word. In that scenario, only PERCH would remain.

Another way to think about this approach: If you know that a certain letter appears twice, you can still use this method of elimination. For example, BEECH includes two E’s, in positions two and three, while GEESE includes three, in positions two, three and five. Both are valid options.

If you want to get even more specific, you could consider the possible positions of a particular letter. For instance, if the “R” in position one appeared yellow, then PERCH would still be a possible guess. The “R” would appear elsewhere in the answer.

Using the Finder

Wordle’s finder tool will let you input your current constraints — known and excluded letters, along with their placements — and return the possible answers. However, it won’t tell you which word you should choose next. That’s where the solver becomes useful.

But remember: Wordle’s feedback across guesses matters. For example, if a letter has already been used, you need to account for the copy counts. If you guess more copies of a given letter than the answer contains, the extra copies will appear gray on the board. A copy turns green only when it matches the letter in that position.

The key to using the finder effectively is knowing what constraints you can apply. For example, if you know the “E” is green, you can filter for that and add any additional letters you know to include in the answer. You can also eliminate letters you know aren’t in the answer. In the site’s five-letter finder, put E in the second known-letter position, required letters in include, and letters ruled out entirely in exclude. If you want a suggested next guess, the site’s homepage solver takes your guesses and tile colors.

Five-slot word candidates narrow through filters for known positions, required letters and excluded letters.

Manual checks for misplaced letters or duplicate counts are essential. It’s important to note that Wordle uses all of the tiles on the board. Each green or yellow tile accounts for one copy of a letter in the answer. An additional E can be green or yellow if the answer contains another copy; any guessed copies beyond the answer’s count will show up as gray.

Word Lists and Possible Wordle Answers

Real Statistics analyzes a list of 2,315 possible Wordle target words. There are more than 200 entries on the BestWordList Scrabble site that contain an E as the second letter. These include some that are valid in Scrabble worldwide (black), some that aren’t valid in North America (red), and some that are valid only in North America (green).

Xfire advertises a list of official Wordle answers, but the supplied page doesn’t establish the provenance of that label. An example shortlist of five-letter words containing an E as the second letter, like DEPOT, FEAST, and LEMON, match the pattern, although it’s unclear whether these represent the full Wordle answer pool or count. Matching the pattern alone doesn’t tell you whether an individual entry is accepted as a Wordle guess or eligible as an answer. BestWordList’s regional Scrabble distinctions don’t establish either.

So why do we care? Because when Wordle updates its answer pool, the game itself is affected, meaning players must adapt to the changes.

As Wordle continues to evolve, it’s clear that our understanding of the game will continue to grow as well. We’re here to ensure that you have everything you need to enjoy the game and discover all its secrets.
