If you need a 5-letter word starting with LIT, there are three core five-letter matches in our shortlist: LITHE, LITER and LITRE. Let’s start with those. According to the dictionary definitions at WordHippo, LITHE is an adjective that means flexible, capable of being easily bent. In this context, LITHE would have the letters H and E in positions 4 and 5, respectively. LITER is the American spelling of LITRE. The latter is defined as a metric unit of fluid measure, one cubic decimetre. It’s also spelled LITRE, so we can see that R and E occupy positions 4 and 5. LITHE, LITER and LITRE are all listed by both WordHippo and BestWordList.
According to the dictionary definitions at BestWordList, additional entries exist, such as LITAI (plural of LITAS), which were former monetary units of Lithuania, also referred to as LIT. LITED is the simple past tense and past participle of lite; LITES is the plural of lite; LITE is also the verb used by Spenser to describe the act of alighting or dismounting, which is also known as LYTE. LITHO refers to a clipping of lithographic; the clipping of lithograph, which is also the verb to lithograph. LITHS is the plural of lith, while LITH refers to the Scots joint, specifically the last joint of the finger.
It should be noted that word-list membership, acceptance as a guess and eligibility as an answer are three separate claims when assessing this list. For example, according to WordHippo, there are five-letter words that begin with LIT, including those mentioned above. BestWordList offers definitions within its Scrabble-oriented list. Other sites claim more general validity, like WordTips, which says that every five-letter LIT word on its page is valid in the Scrabble (TWL and SOWPODS), Wordle and Words With Friends dictionaries. But other sources suggest differing lists of popular five-letter words, or complete lists.
A Shortlist
The current status of the word shortlist, however, is documented by multiple sources. You’ll need to confirm whether it appears on your current Wordle game, and if it counts as an accepted guess or eligible as an answer.
Tile filtering
Let’s look at how the tiles might have filtered our subset of options. Remember, we’re only using our core trio for this purpose: LITHE, LITER and LITRE.
In this scenario, the letter L is fixed in position 1, I in position 2, T in position 3. If you found a green E in position 4, then only LITER would be retained. A green E in position 5, meanwhile, would retain LITHE and LITRE.

If the green tile was instead yellow, in position 4, LITER would be excluded. And if the confirmed-absent letter was H, then LITHE would be removed from consideration. Confirmed-absent R, meanwhile, would eliminate both LITER and LITRE from consideration. There’s no telling what the correct answer is, of course — though it could be any of these!
Spelling deductions
Now let’s take the hypothetical approach of applying clues within this core trio. What happens if each positional or confirmed-absence clue changes that subset?
Example: The letters L, I and T are fixed in positions 1–3. A green E appears in position 4. Only LITER remains, because of the E in position 4.
A green E in position 5 removes the possibility of LITER, leaving only LITHE and LITRE.
Now suppose a yellow E appeared in position 4. This excludes LITER, but the other two words remain possible.
What if the H had been confirmed absent? That would eliminate LITHE.
And finally, what if R was confirmed absent? Then both LITER and LITRE would go away, leaving LITHE.
This isn’t a comprehensive review of the hypothetical outcomes, of course. It’s simply meant to show how these various clues affect the shortlist.
Clue application
To apply the clues within the browser word finder, navigate to the page’s controls and check each of them. Use Known letters for L, I and T in positions 1–3 and any additional greens. Put yellows in Include letters and confirmed absences in Exclude letters. You’ll still need to reject any match that puts a yellow letter in the position where you guessed it. For example, WordHippo may tell you that E is present elsewhere in the puzzle, which means it can still appear in either position 4 or 5. Or you might find that the E was confirmed absent from the puzzle.
When reviewing potential matches, always remember that the presence of a forbidden yellow tile may remove a particular match. If there is a repeated letter in the puzzle, then you’ll need to resolve that feedback before excluding a whole letter. Each green or yellow tile accounts for one copy. Extra guessed copies can be gray, so a gray tile alone doesn’t rule out that letter. Only exclude it entirely when none of its copies came back green or yellow.
