how to use

How to Use the Wordle Helper

  1. Type your guess. Use the keyboard on screen or your own. Each row needs five letters before it counts.
  2. Tap tiles to copy your colors. One tap makes a tile yellow, two make it green, three turn it gray again.
  3. Pick your next word. The count of possible answers and the top three guesses update instantly. Copy one, or press Use this word to drop it into the next row.

Stuck on a pattern rather than a board? The 5 letter word finder searches by known positions and letters to include or leave out.

worked example

A Full Example, Row by Row

  1. CRANE finds a green C and nothing else, which leaves 126 words (37 common).
  2. MOULT puts U in the middle and shows that L is in the word but not fourth: only 2 words fit.
  3. CLUCK solves it in three rows.

sample games

Five Games Played by the Solver

Each game opens with RAISE and then plays the solver's first suggestion every time. The number in brackets is how many words still fit after that row. These five answers took 4.2 guesses on average.

AnswerGuesses (words left)Rows
LIGHTRAISE (314) → MONTH (11) → BYLAW (2) → LIGHT4
SUGARRAISE (115) → STAMP (11) → SOLAR (1) → SUGAR4
KNOLLRAISE (426) → LUNCH (10) → NOBLY (1) → KNOLL4
WHELPRAISE (445) → HOTLY (3) → WHELK (2) → WHELP4
PROXYRAISE (187) → COUNT (21) → DROOP (2) → PROWL (1) → PROXY5

Notice how the second guess rarely fits the clues: MONTH, COUNT and STAMP are chosen to split the remaining words, not to be the answer. By the third row only a few words are left, and once one or two remain the solver guesses a word that can win.

repeated letters

Repeated Letters: How the Colors Work

Wordle marks greens first. Yellows then use up the answer's remaining copies of a letter, from left to right, and any copy beyond that is gray. That is why one guess can show the same letter in two colors.

  • SPEED against ABIDE scores the first E yellow and the second E gray: ABIDE has only one E, so the gray tells you there is exactly one.
  • LOLLY against HELLO scores two green L's and a gray third L: HELLO has two L's and both are already accounted for.

The solver uses this exact rule, so you can copy the colors as they appear without adjusting them.

hard mode & hints

Hard Mode and Hint Mode

In the game's hard mode every guess must keep the greens in place and include the yellows. Turn on Hard mode here and the suggestions follow the same rule, using every clue you have found.

Hint mode is for days you want a nudge, not an answer. It hides all the words and shows how many are left, the positions that are certain and the unknown letters that appear most often, such as “S (58%)”.

strategy

Wordle Strategy: Solve in Fewer Guesses

Spend your second row on new letters. After a weak first row, a guess that tests five fresh letters usually beats one that tries to fit the clues. E appears in 46% of common answers, A in 39%, R in 35%, and O, I, T, S and L in roughly a quarter to a third each; covering several of them early narrows the list fastest.

Expect repeated letters. About 33% of common answers repeat a letter, as in SPEED, ROBOT or LLAMA. When only one or two words are left and none of your guesses has repeated a letter yet, a double letter is a real possibility, not a long shot.

Use the ends of the word. 17% of common answers end in E and 16% in Y, while 16% start with S. A yellow E or Y often belongs in the last position; check the words ending in E when it fits.

Don't chase a trap pattern one letter at a time. Boards like _IGHT or _OUND can have five or more answers that differ in a single letter. Guessing them one by one can cost every row you have left. Play a word that tests several of the missing letters at once, which is exactly what the solver's suggestions do when many words share a pattern.

how we rank

How the Next Guess Is Chosen

A good guess is one that splits the remaining words into many small groups, because whatever colors come back, few words are left. For every candidate guess the solver works out the color pattern it would get against each possible answer, counts the groups and measures how even they are (its expected information, in bits). The three guesses that split the list best are shown, with the number of groups and the worst case.

Suggestions come from about 2,750 common words, so you never get an odd guess like ABAFT. When a candidate is just as good as another word and could also be the answer, it goes first. On your first row the best opener in our ranking is RAISE, which leaves about 74 of 2,765 common answers on average (CRANE leaves about 100). The full table is on best Wordle starting words.

Our word list combines ENABLE and SCOWL (8,802 valid words, 2,765 common ones). It is not the official answer list, and words you type that are not in it still work as guesses. Browse it by letter in the 5 letter words lists.

faq

Frequently asked questions

How does this Wordle solver work?

Type each guess you made, then tap its tiles until they match the colors in your game: gray, yellow or green. After every change the solver checks all 8,802 five-letter words in its list and keeps only the ones that would have produced exactly the same colors. It then ranks guesses by how evenly they split the words that are left, so your next row teaches you as much as possible.

Will it tell me today’s Wordle answer?

No. This is a helper, not an answer key: it never looks up the daily puzzle. It only works from the guesses and colors you enter, so the result is the list of words that still fit your own board.

How do I use it without spoiling the puzzle?

Switch on Hint mode. The solver then hides every word and shows only how many answers are left, which positions are already certain, and which unknown letters appear most often among the remaining words.

What happens with repeated letters?

The solver scores guesses exactly like the game: greens are marked first, then yellows use up the answer’s remaining copies of a letter from left to right, and any extra copy is gray. So a gray second E next to a yellow first E means the answer has exactly one E.

Does it support hard mode?

Yes. With Hard mode on, every suggested guess uses all the clues you have found: greens stay in place and yellows are included, so the suggestions are always legal hard-mode plays.

Why does it say these colors can’t all be true?

Some color combinations cannot come from any answer, often because one tile was tapped one time too many. The solver names the row and, when it can, the exact tile to check, and keeps your board as it is so you can fix it.

Which words can be answers?

Every valid five-letter word in our list can be matched, but the solver puts about 2,750 common words first because daily answers are everyday words rather than obscure ones. Rare words stay one tap away under “less common words”.

Is my board saved or sent anywhere?

No. All the work happens in your browser. Your guesses and colors are not uploaded, stored or included in analytics; only your Hint and Hard mode settings are remembered on your own device.
